Jurgen Klopp leaving Liverpool: ‘Running out of energy’

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is departing the club at the end of the season, he announced today in a video to fans.

His main reason for leaving is that he is “running out of energy.”

“I love absolutely everything about this club,” he said. “I love everything about the city, I love everything about our supporters, I love the team, I love the staff. I love everything. But that I still take this decision shows you that I am convinced it is the one I have to take. It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy. I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again.”

Klopp has been a manager since his retirement from professional soccer in 2001. He started in his home country of Germany with Mainz 05, before moving on to Borussia Dortmund. He is the longest-serving manager of both of those clubs, serving for eight and seven years, respectively.

He made the move to Liverpool in 2015, With The Reds, he has helped the team get to two UEFA Champions League title games, won a UEFA Super Cup, a FIFA Club World Cup, and a Premier League title, their first in 30 years.

“For me it was super, super, super important that I can help to bring this team back onto the rails. It was all I was thinking about,” Klopp said. “When I realized pretty early that happened, it’s a really good team with massive potential and a super age group, super characters and all that, then I could start thinking about myself again and that was the outcome.”

Klopp has also confirmed that he will take next year off, not coaching at all. He also said he will not coach another club in England.

This season, Liverpool is at the top of the Premier League standings. They are in contention for the Premier League Title, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and the Europa League.

“We are Liverpool, we went through harder things together,” Klopp said. “And you went through harder things before me. Let’s make a strength of it. That would be really cool. Let’s squeeze everything out of this season and have another thing to smile about when we look back in the future.”
